Inflorescence
The Alpinia purpurata, Tahitian Ginger,
by far the largest of the
Alpinias, produces a giant hanging inflorescence
made up of groups of bright red bract clumps.
Most people
think of the red bracts as the bloom, but the true flower are small
white flowers that eventually poke out of the bracts as they age.
If allowed to remain on a mature plant, the inflorescence may reach
a size of 12 inches (30 cm.) or more and will be a "Wow!"
part of your tropical garden.
The Tahitian Ginger
plant is large plant. Allow enough space around it for its long
leaves and flower stems. This is a rare and much desired plant
among collectors and landscapers. When using the flowers in a
floral arrangement, use only heavy, broad-based flower vases and
keep away from drafts that may cause it to topple.
Gingers belong in the plant family
Zingiberaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales.
Please review the
Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information.
