Inflorescence
The Stromanthe lutea, Orange, produces panicles of light yellow flowers with bright yellow bracts. Small, white flowers will peek from the bracts as they mature.
Some growers and florists humorously call it Pico de Gallo (Rooster's beak) as the inflorescence seems to form a string of little beaks. Some sources also refer to it as Stromanthe jacquinii, or incorrectly as Orange Calathea.
Stromanthes do well in tropical and subtropical climates where the winters are relatively warm. In colder weather they must be cared for indoors close to a source of natural light. Outdoors, it prefers partial shade and moist humid conditions with well drained soil. It can tolerate full sun in favorable soil and humidity conditions.
Stromanthes, just as Calatheas, belong in the plant family Marantaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales.
Please review the Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information.

| Plant Characteristics |
Blooming
The Stromanthe lutea, Orange is a generous bloomer from Spring to Summer.
Height
The Pico de Gallo is a large sized plant and reaches 6 to 10 ft. in height. Does well in large containers and can spend some time indoors. Very dramatic prescence in a tropical garden, but can get very large outside a container.
Habitat
Prefers partial shade. Moderately humid soil.
Cut Flower
The inflorescences grow in 1 to 2 ft. stalks and are very easy to cut. The flower is very long-lasting in a floral arrangement, and is very popular with florists for its unusual shape and coloring.
This is a gardener-friendly plant and very easy to grow. In a floral arrangement, just add some foliage and enjoy for weeks.
