| General Information | Inflorescence The Strelitzia nicolai, White Bird of Paradise produces large, beautiful flowers with white sepals and blue petals emerging from a beak-like sheath called spathe. The foliage on this plant is also very attractive with evergreen, stiff dark green leaves that can reach 6 ft. in length. Sometimes called "The Natal Wild Banana", it is not a banana (Musa) at all, but has similar growth habits. These plants are shipped in well-established 1-gallon liners larger than those pictured below. This makes them somewhat heavier to ship, but faster to develop when planted outdoors or in larger containers. Allow plants to adapt to your environment and sunlight before planting or repotting. Strelitzias belong in the plant family Strelitziaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales. Please review the Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information. | | Plant Characteristics | Blooming The Strelitzia nicolai, White Bird of Paradise is a generous bloomer outdoors - year-round in some areas, but it may be three to four years before it starts to flower. Height The adult plant is very large, slow-growing, and can reach 20 to 30 ft. in height. An impressive outdoor plant, but good for indoors or for growing in large containers only for a few years. Divide and repot when the plant overruns the container, or control by cutting some new stems as they sprout. Habitat Full sun to partial shade. Moderately humid soil. Cut Flower The flowers complement the plant, but are not long-lasting in floral arrangements. They are best left on the plant. For floral arrangements the Orange Bird of Paradise is an excellent choice. | | | | | © Agriflora Tropicals 2009 |
