| General Information | Inflorescence The Heliconia x rauliana, Barreiros, produces bright colorful inflorescences with bright red pendant and twisty bracts with yellow lips and tips. Most people think of the bracts as the bloom, but the true flower are stiff green (and some white) sepals that poke out of the bracts at various points. This rare and unique heliconia has to be seen to be appreciated. It is classified as a pendant variety, but its inflorescence starts out as erect, and slowly droops and twists as it gets longer and heavier. Think contorted and serpentine and you know there is not another heliconia like this.
This plant is really a hybrid of H. marginata and H. bihai developed by a Brazilian horticulturist. Foliage is fairly open and a lot of blooms can be seen at the same time. Heliconias belong in the plant family Heliconaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales.
