The Heliconia psittacorum, Kathy, produces small, colorful flowers with brightly colored deep-red bracts. Most people think of the bracts as the bloom, but the true flower are the stiff orange sepals that poke out of the bracts at various points.
Some writers lump all the various psittacorums into the misnomer "Parrot's Beak", but each of the many cultivars in this group has distinctive colors and characteristics and should be known by its proper name.
Heliconias belong in the plant family Heliconiaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales.
Please review the Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information.
The Heliconia psittacorum, Kathy is a generous bloomer all year round.
All the psittacorum heliconias are smaller and more delicate that the psittacorum x spathocircinata cousins and average 2 to 3 ft. in height. They are quick and aggressive in their growth and do better in bound spaces or open fields away from walkways and structures. Recommended for container planting.
Full sun to partial shade. Moderately humid soil.
Very decorative in floral arrangements when combined with smaller gingers and orchids. Fresh flower will last 7 to 10 days in clean water.
