General Information

Inflorescence

The Heliconia caribaea x bihai, Big Red produces large, colorful flowers with bright red bracts.  Most people think of the bracts as the bloom, but the true flower are stiff green and white sepals that poke out of the bracts at various points.

Heliconias belong in the plant family Heliconiaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales.

Plant Characteristics
Blooming

 The Heliconia caribaea x bihai, Big Red is a generous bloomer in summer and fall.
Height

All the caribaea heliconias are large and average 8 to 10 ft. in height.  Not recommended for container planting.

 Habitat

Full sun to partial shade.  Moderately humid soil.

 Cut Flower

Flower is great as focal point in floral arrangements when combined with smaller heliconias and foliage.  Fresh flower will last 7 to 14 days in clean water.
